Recognizing Jesus

Recognizing Jesus

St. Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first Letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true.

Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples.

Frightened, sad, and confused, the two don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: all this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him in the breaking of the bread.

Reconozcan A Jesús

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Community Grooming is the hardest to recognize because the predator seeks to present themselves as the “ideal” person: employee, volunteer, coach, scout leader, or parent for example. In this guise, the predator builds trust and a good reputation, especially with people of authority around children, which ultimately ensures access to children.

In this stage the predator advances the grooming process from seemingly innocent touching, accidental touching, increased sexualized touching, to exposing themselves and/or the child.

Even if the child comes to feel something is wrong, they think they cannot say anything as this is the “ideal” person. A well-respected adult and that no one would believe them.

Stay with us, Lord

Stay with us, Lord

Walk with us, Lord, along the road of resurrection! Explain for us, so we to believe, the things that Scripture says for you. Break the bread of the Eucharist with us whenever we share our lives with our brothers and sisters. Stay with us each time night approaches and daylight fades in our hearts!

Becoming a godparent/sponsor in the Catholic Church

Becoming a godparent/sponsor in the Catholic Church

Being chosen as a godparent for baptism is an honor, for the godparent traditionally becomes a spiritual companion to the one being baptized in a journey of faith.  Please decide if your faith life makes you ready to publicly pledge that you have been leading a life in harmony with the Catholic tradition.

Godparents should be both role models and resource persons, individuals who are at ease with the practice of their faith and would normally be considered as “active Catholics.” They should be people who are comfortable with answering questions about their personal relationship with God as experienced in the Catholic Communion, even if they are unsure of all the technicalities.
