Discipleship and Wealth

Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Sometimes we get the idea that having material wealth is a bad thing. We may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than “material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most.

Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives.

Vote No on 4

Friday, August 16, 2024

Amendment 4 would:

  • Eliminate Parental Consent
  • Weaken medical doctor requirement
  • Put women's health at risk
  • Allow Second and Third Trimester abortions
  • Create a broad "health" loophole

Vote NO on 4

Amendment 4 is a proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that would essentially establish an unlimited right to abortion throughout pregnancy even when the heartbeat of the preborn child is detected, when the preborn child can experience pain, and when the child is capable of living outside the womb.

Amendment 4 will appear on the November 5, 2024, ballot and require approval from 60% of the electorate to pass.

We urge all parishes, schools, families, ministries, and individual Catholics to encourage voters to join in our opposition and reject this extreme and ill-conceived proposition.

FL Bishops’ Statement: Vote "NO" on Amendment 4

"We urge all Floridians of goodwill to stand against the legalization of late-term abortion and oppose the abortion amendment. In doing so, we will not only protect the weakest, most innocent, and defenseless of human life among us but also countless women throughout the state from the harms of abortion," said the bishops of Florida in their statement on Amendment 4.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski Key Messages

  • This proposed amendment to our state constitution would prohibit all restrictions on abortion before viability and create a broad exception that any “healthcare provider” could exploit to allow abortion up to birth. I urge all Catholics and people of good will: Vote “no” on Amendment 4!
  • Catholics are nevertheless to engage themselves in the public square and do so coherently and unapologetically. To bear witness is our duty as faithful Catholics and it is our right as faith filled citizens. Vote “no” on Amendment 4!
  • This is not to “impose our views” but to “make our proposal” about what is necessary for human flourishing in society. By insisting that every human being matters, we bring to public policy debates on issues of human dignity, justice and peace, an understanding of the human person that, while founded on the Christian Scriptures, is also accessible to human reason
  • In making our proposal, we hope to persuade our fellow Floridians to vote “no” on Amendment 4!

Becoming a godparent/sponsor in the Catholic Church +

Thursday, April 8, 2021

Being chosen as a godparent for baptism is an honor, for the godparent traditionally becomes a spiritual companion to the one being baptized in a journey of faith.

Please decide if your faith life makes you ready to publicly pledge that you have been leading a life in harmony with the Catholic tradition. Godparents should be both role models and resource persons, individuals who are at ease with the practice of their faith and would normally be considered as "active Catholics." They should be people who are comfortable with answering questions about their personal relationship with God as experienced in the Catholic Communion, even if they are unsure of all the technicalities. Godparents should be people who are interested in and will continue to spiritually support the "godchild" in the years ahead.
